Project ECHO: Clinical Concerns for Emerging Vape Shop Trends

The intent of this series to provide comprehensive substance use disorder education. The series is designed with providers with prescribing privileges in mind, but is open to other relevant members of the community and care team.

This ECHO will discuss emerging and established trends in substances frequently encountered in vape shops and other similar locations. This series will highlight clinical resources, best practices, and clinical innovations to more efficiently and broadly care for and educate patients on the risks inherent in using these substances. Routine immunoassay urine drug screens often do not detect these substances so it is important for clinicians to have knowledge of these substances to make accurate clinical diagnoses.

This ECHO is sponsored by the Adult Psychiatric Access Line (APAL) program in partnership with the University of Virginia and the Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Outreach.

1) Discuss the most recent epidemiological trends in substance use/misuse

2) Review the clinical effects of the various classes of emerging substances

3) Highlight the appropriate management of patients using these substances

4) Review the limitations of currently available “urine drug screens”

5) Understand the different varieties and forms of the discussed substances
